Say what you want about the old lady with the crazy cat, but Mrs. Norberry’s chocolate chip cookies were amazing. After Max had saved her cat she had sent over around seven dozen cookies. I had barely seen Max in the last week. He was really taking what I said to heart and was out doing the little things helping out the average Joe while laying low from the media. The media was starting to become an issue though. Max was gaining quite the following online, as you could expect a real life super hero would. Smaller media outlets were starting to take notice and as I was the only contact Max gave I had an ever growing inbox asking for information or an interview. It wouldn’t be long until the big names started to come knocking. I had to act soon, I had to show Max to the world on our terms not the terms of some journalist who could twist his existence any way they wanted to make money. I need to do something big but I needed to control it.
“Yeah,” Max said with a grin. “The building was coming down so I froze the outside to hold it up and ran in to save everyone, I was incredible.”
“What about this one?” I asked holding up another paper showing a man dragging two would be kidnappers towards a police car. Both suspects looked as if they had been ever so slightly burnt. The headline read Human Torch Captures Kidnappers.
“Yeah,” he said. “I saved two little girls.”
“Considering you’re the only one that can fly I assume this was you?” I asked, holding up a third newspaper with the headline Mysterious Flying Man Intercepts Touchdown Pass. “Fancy, yourself a football player now?” The annoyance was starting to show in my voice.
“Captain Ice” he said.
“No” I groaned.
“Captain Fire” he tried again.
“That’s even worse” I said.
“Captain Ice Fire” he said enthusiastically. Thankfully the look on his face told me he wasn’t actually serious.
“Make more coffee” I said ignoring his last suggestion. It had been a week since he came into my office. This morning had been when we had decided to meet. Thankfully I didn’t have any other appointments today, or ever, because it was now well past dark. My desk was covered in note and research material. By research material I mean comic books. How else are you supposed to figure out about super heroes?
My name is Kevin O’Connor and my life is awesome. I am the CMO of a fortune 500 company. My house has more rooms than I need and I only use about a quarter of the cars I own. Had you asked me 15 years ago if my life would have been like this I would have told “yes, 100%! I am going to be rich and important someday” that was in my final year of my business degree. Ask me if I would be in this position ten years ago and I would have told you to get out of my office (If you could call it that). Those dreams of being rich and important were out the window. Replaced with the dream of actually paying rent on time that month. To explain how I got to where I am now I guess I have to go back ten years and explain the whirlwind that was my life.
This idea came to mind after listening to one of Ryan Hanley’s Podcasts. His podcast is called Content Warfare and if you don’t already I suggest listening to it! In a recent podcast Dustin Stout was a guest and they were talking about how super heroes are a great example of good PR. After the show I tweeted about how awesome it would be to be the PR manager for a superhero. As I thought about it more and more I began to make more and more connection between how superheroes present themselves and how companies should. Since the world current has a lack of super heroes the likelihood of getting a job as the PR manager for a super hero is pretty low. I’ve decided to do the next best thing. Over the next couple of weeks I’ll be compiling a short story about the life and the challenges of being the PR manager for a super hero. Don’t worry I asked Stout’s permission to build off his idea. Hopefully by the end of it I’ll have outlined the similarities between managing a super heroes PR and handling a company’s. Part one will most likely be published later tonight and parts to follow will come probably once or twice a week.
Let me know what you think,
